Bunion, Hammertoes & Painful Joint Treatment in Chicago

Don't suffer from painful foot conditions any longer!

Do you suffer from bunions, hammertoes, or painful joints? A bunion is when there is a prominence of bone on the inside of the forefoot. These tend to be more common among women than men, which may be an attribute to the high heels women wear. There are also genetic factors which make people more susceptible to bunions. Some causes include:

  • Family/genetics
  • Narrow-toed shoes and high heels
  • Limb length inequality
  • Ligamentous laxity
  • Trauma to big toe region
  • Arthritis

There are various treatments, such as:

  • Modification of shoe gear
  • Callous trimming
  • Steroid injections
  • Surgical treatment if necessary

Hammertoes can also be frustrating and painful. They usually appear due to instability in the joints. A hammertoe is when a toe or toes are deformed at the proximal interphalangeal joint. They are often caused by:

  • A very high arched foot
  • Neuromuscular imbalance
  • Loss of muscle tendon strength
  • Trauma
  • Excessive use of high heels or shoes that are too narrow or short

Treatments include:

  • Using wider/deeper shoes
  • Accommodative padding
  • Orthotics with modifications
