The Potawatomi people and other Native American tribes lived in the Chicago area when the first French explorers and fur traders came in the late 1600s. The first non-native settlers came during the late 1700s, and the United States built Fort Dearborn in 1803. Chicago was formally incorporated in 1833, and the completion of the Illinois and Michigan Canal in 1848 helped make Chicago a major transport hub.

Though Chicago suffered a terrible fire in 1871, the city bounced back to host the Columbian Exposition of 1893 and the Century of Progress Exposition in 1933 and 34. Today, Chicago is home to 2.7 million residents, making it the third largest city in the U.S. The Windy City's O'Hare International Airport is the second-busiest airport in the world.
